This website is about the design and layout of residential houses and flats in the UK; in particular, their shape, size and proportion. These aspects of a home can’t be easily changed once a house or flat has been built and yet they are critical to their success as pleasant, comfortable living spaces.
My interest in domestic architecture has been spurred by my own experience of living in a terraced house (row house). I am not an architect but just someone with a keen interest in architecture and housing in particular.
Flats and terraced homes tend to be associated with dense urban environments and they represent one solution to tight urban spaces. But flats and terraces also suffer from problems such as noise from adjoining properties and a lack of privacy – shortcomings I’m all too familiar with!
This site will explore some of the issues surrounding the design and construction of these and other homes.
